As the cliché goes, Istanbul is where east meets west, or vice-versa. Thus unique location combined with its history and occupants of different cultural backgrounds make this city a true melting pot.
Istanbul has it all; over 2500 years of history, culture and traditions, amazing landmarks, vibrant nightlife and breathtaking views. This transcontinental metropolis is a fast paced world you can’t afford to miss. Istanbul is the world’s only city in which a sea passes through it, which also has been the capital of three empires, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman and which sits on two continents with its 2500 years history, Istanbul is so rich that there are too many things to do for first timers, despite the city’s age, thankfully many of Istanbul opulent past remained intact.
The cultural heritage of the metropolis is pretty impressive. Who hasn’t heard of the Blue mosque, Dolmabache palace, the historic peninsula with Haghia Sophia, which has decorated the city’s skyline for about 1500 years, and Topkapi palace, where the ottoman dynasty ruled and the Grand Bazaar, the world’s oldest and biggest covered market.
Go to the Grand Bazaar and the spice market (Egyptian Bazaar) via mahmutpasa and see all the local markets on the way. And then there are lesser known but not less beautiful spots such as Suleymaniye mosque, basilica Cistern, the Galata tower, as well as numerous churches from the Byzantine Era.
There’s also Buyuk Valide Han on the way. Its rooftop offers one of Istanbul’s best panoramic views. Oooh! have I told you about the Bosphorus bridge? Clearly not.
The Bosphorus bridge. Known officially as the 15th July martyrs and unofficially as the first bridge, is one of the three suspension bridges spanning the Bosphorus straits of Istanbul, thus connecting Europe and Asia. Now you see why Istanbul is the gateway from the east to west.
Istanbul is a city to many beautiful buildings and palaces. It’s also home to a lively nightlife and many restaurants. Istanbul is without a doubt one of the cities in world that everyone should visit at least once!
